Encourage your local schools to work with community early learning programs to help our preschoolers get ready for kindergarten

Kindergarten is a big step for a child and his family. Many early learning programs and elementary schools work together to make the move to kindergarten easier and fun! In some communities, the kindergarten and elementary school principals visit preschoolers in the neighborhood child care and Head Start programs. Others will have a "kindergarten day" when preschoolers visit the school that they will be attending or follow the schedule that the kindergarteners follow so they can get used to the routine. By making the transition to kindergarten smoother, children feel comfortable sooner and it's easier for them to learn.

  • Your county's community engagement group may be working with schools and early learning programs to encourage these types of transition activities. Contact the community engagement group to see what's happening in your community.
  • Contact your local elementary school and ask the principal or kindergarten teachers how they are helping to make the transition easier for our kindergartners.
  • Contact your local parent-teacher association (PTA). Many PTA's address early education and would be willing to help promote transition activities between schools and early learning programs.
